What children practise
How to use the pack
- 1. Print page one at 100% on A4 paper.
- 2. Cut the four cards apart and give one to each player.
- 3. Use page two to call, show or describe each item.
- 4. Play for the first row, column or diagonal. Cards have different arrangements but share the same eight items, so full-house games finish together and line wins may tie.
Suggested 15-minute lesson · 1–4 players
Teach the words. Then play.
Name everyday science items and distinguish a symbol from the thing it represents.
Learning goals
- Match eight spoken science words to their agreed picture prompts.
- Give one observation or simple description of a familiar science item.
Before the lesson
- Print the pack on A4 landscape, cut out the four cards and provide counters.
- Keep the caller sheet. If available, prepare a plant, a container of water and a classroom magnet for supervised demonstration.
Use large, age-appropriate counters. The card PDF is two A4 landscape pages; the teacher guide is a separate two-page A4 portrait PDF.
0-4 min
Connect words to examples
Show the eight caller tiles and name their intended labels. Use a real object where available. Explain the symbolic pictures for Animal and Air.
4-6 min
Demonstrate the game
Give out cards, mark FREE and show a row of three. Model one direct word call and a matching counter.
6-12 min
Play and record calls
Shuffle the tiles and call the exact names. Add a simple description once words are familiar. Keep a call record and check all claimed lines.
12-15 min
Observe and describe
Invite each child to choose one tile and say something they can observe or already know. Separate observation from a guess. Model a more precise explanation when needed.
Caller prompts for all eight items
The labels below match the downloadable cards. Start with the direct label, then use the suggested prompt when it fits your group. Keep called tiles aside so you can check a winning line.
| Card label | What to say or demonstrate |
|---|---|
| Plant | Find Plant. The picture shows a seedling. |
| Animal | Find Animal. Paw prints are our symbol for this word. |
| Water | Find Water. The picture shows a drop. |
| Air | Find Air. The motion lines represent moving air. |
| Sun | Find Sun. The Sun is the star nearest Earth. |
| Moon | Find Moon. It is Earth's natural satellite. |
| Magnet | Find Magnet. A magnet attracts some materials. |
| Microscope | Find Microscope. It helps us look closely at small things. |
Vocabulary list to copy into your own activity
One item per line. You can select this list and copy it into the word caller or a custom card activity.
Make the activity fit your learners
Add support
Say the word and show a real object or caller tile together. Rehearse the agreed symbol labels before using descriptive clues.
Offer a challenge
Ask pupils to suggest a different picture for Air or Animal and explain why it would be useful. Test a teacher-selected material with a magnet and describe the observation.
A quick learning check
Can the child name an item and give one appropriate description? Ask how the Air picture differs from air itself.
Playing with more than four children?
The free set has four layouts. You can play in pairs, rotate a small group, or print extra copies and explain that some players share a card. The optional 50-card pack gives more shuffled layouts of the same eight items. All cards share the vocabulary, so line wins may tie and full-house games finish together.
Before you call, show a winning pattern. For this shared eight-item set, a row, column or diagonal of three is a useful starting rule.
