CVC word bingo turns a short list of consonant–vowel–consonant words into a listening and blending game. Start with words your pupils have already been taught. A small grid lets you practise those words without introducing a whole new vocabulary set.
Download the free CVC picture bingo starter pack for an eight-word game, or use the list below to plan your own cards. The starter pack and the custom list are separate resources; the downloadable pack does not contain all 24 words below.
A 24-word CVC bingo list
This list uses familiar short-vowel words with concrete meanings. Select only words that match your phonics sequence. For example, leave out jet until pupils know the sound represented by j.
cat, hat, mat, rat, bag, cap, hen, pen, net, bed, jet, leg, pig, pin, fin, lid, lip, wig, dog, log, pot, cup, sun, bug
For the custom picture generator, paste one word per line using “Use my word list”. A 3×3 grid needs at least 8 words, a 4×4 grid needs 16, and a 5×5 grid needs 24. You can enter up to 30 words. Odd-sized grids include a FREE centre. Do not add FREE to your vocabulary list.
Picture cards or printed words?
- Picture cards: say a word or blend its sounds aloud; pupils find the matching object. This is listening and recognition practice. Recognising a cat picture does not show that a child can decode the printed word.
- Word cards: pupils read the printed words to locate the item you call. Use the text bingo generator when reading the word itself is your main goal.
- A mixed group: pair a reader with a listener and ask them to explain their match before placing a counter.
A suggested 10-minute small-group lesson
- Prepare: give each pupil a card and counters. Keep one complete word list for the caller.
- Rehearse for two minutes: point to each picture or word, agree its label and practise one example together.
- Model a turn: segment cat into its sounds, blend it, and show pupils how to mark the matching square.
- Play for five minutes: draw words without replacement. Pause between calls so pupils can blend and check.
- Check a winning line: ask the pupil to say or read each marked word. Verify those words against your called list.
- Finish: choose two words to revisit. Ask pupils to blend them again without relying on the card position.
Three ways to adjust the game
Keep it small: choose eight familiar words for a 3×3 card. Use a line of three as the winning pattern.
Practise a vowel contrast: choose a teacher-checked set such as cat, cap, hat, mat, pin, pig, fin and lid. Say the whole word first; add sound segmentation only when it fits the lesson.
Add reading practice: after a picture match, show the written word and ask pupils to blend it. Keep the game supportive and allow thinking time.
Create your custom set
Open the CVC picture bingo builder, select “Use my word list”, and paste your chosen words one per line. Review spelling before choosing a paid pack. Custom AI pictures are created after payment; the free word review is not a finished illustrated-card download.

Can I reuse the cards?
Yes: use counters rather than pens and keep a printed caller list with the set. Shuffle the calling order for the next round. Different layouts can still produce simultaneous winners, so agree how you will handle a tie before playing.
